Keen’s Steakhouse is known for two things: Steak and Pipes. Pipes? Keen’s owns the largest collection of churchwarden pipes in the world, including those on display from Babe Ruth and Theodore Roosevelt (among a long list of other famous people’s pipes displayed at the restaurant). Prior to 1885, Keens was a part of a famous theatre and literary group founded in London, but in 1885 it opened independently.

But so much for history. How is their burger? As you would expect from a steakhouse, the Prime quality meat is packed into a nice 8oz patty. The inclusion of some chuck, into the primarily sirloin based mix, makes the burger incredibly juicy. The BOTM review is interesting because only four of the seven of us made it to the review night, where three of us found the burger to be average, while the fourth member ranked it as a top five burger! It certainly is one of the juiciest burgers we have tried, with some of the best tasting bacon in NY City.

The soft, slightly toasted bun and the cheddar cheese, along with the aforementioned bacon, made a nice burger package, although other chesses, including blue cheese area available. You can also get sautéed onions and mushroom, or avocado on the burger. The fries did not stand out, but were certainly good enough to compliment the burger.

It will certainly be interesting to see how the remaining members of the BOTM rank Keene’s. If you go, be prepared for a wide quality range of where the burger could be that night – middle of the pack – or outstanding!

This is definitely one of the best burgers in the city.  Fantastic taste, perfect size (not too big even though it’s a steakhouse burger).  Can’t believe these guys didn’t rank it higher.  I would definitely recommend it.
